Yay! It's that time again! Linda, from Calling It Home, is once again hosting the One Room Challenge. This is a platform allowing us all to follow along as 20 design bloggers redesign a space on a tight time frame. She also allows anyone with a blog to link up and share a makeover we complete during the 6 weeks.
This is my third time participating in the ORC. Last fall we did our laundry room and in the spring we redid our front porch. This time around we are working on getting our 5 year old's room more worthy of being called a big boy room. A large reason we chose this room is because we were hosting a surprise birthday party for my mom this past weekend. We knew we were going to have a lot of people at the house and didn't want the kitchen or main bathroom, both spaces we considered, to be construction zones for the party. And we knew that the stress of hosting would probably throw our schedule off some too, and it did as did the unexpected Hurricane Mathew at the beginning of the month. I am starting to worry that finishing is going to be tight but I think we will get it done since it is all cosmetic updating.
We managed to get the new bedding on the beds in time for the party and our son was so excited about it! We chose Ikea's Benrangel because of the color scheme and because he thought the bones were cool. I figured I would keep it folded where only the stripes show but he pitched a fit and won out. He has been sleeping on top of the sheets and quilt this week too because he says it's too hot with all of it (probably is) and he needs to be under the duvet, with his head as the skull. Needless to say the new bedding is a big hit!
We also got the track storage together and under his bed and it seems to be working pretty well for now. It is even making him want to play with the track more often. Probably because he can see what he has!
This weekend is going to have to be about serious progress or we aren't going to have the room together in time for photos. We still have to get the car and book storage put together and painted, finish getting art framed and arranged, and do a full cleaning and purging of all the little bits he likes to collect, his "treasures". I'm not judging cause he definitely got that characteristic from me (#hoarder). In the meantime you know I will be checking in on what everyone else has accomplished this week!

One Room Challenge - Operation Bigger Boy Room Week 3

This is my third time participating in the ORC. Last fall we did our laundry room and in the spring we redid our front porch. This time around we are working on getting our 5 year old's room more worthy of being called a big boy room. And boy, am I so thankful we chose a simple, decorating and organizing project this time around. This month is barely half over and it has been crazy so far! Once again no real progress has been made, with the exception of a few purchases, most of which haven't arrived yet!
Yes, this makeover was geared towards making his room better reflect his personality and interests while also getting rid of the small child feel it still had a little of, but another crucial component was getting some real organization going. He loves playing with Hot Wheels® and track but storing them is a huge pain in my neck. The cars just get dumped in huge baskets and the track? I have absolutely no idea, it just gets perched around the room wherever I can make it fit. Normally at the ends of beds so that then I have to move it to make said beds.
A while ago I came across an idea on the I Did It! page of Better Homes and Gardens. This cool lady had totally mastered the storage and display of all the cars. We are totally stealing this idea and probably won't even be changing a thing. If it ain't broke why fix it! I mean, the idea is so good she now sells them!
And when I was trolling Pinterest for ideas on storing cars I found this idea for track storage. It was pinned from the Hot Wheels® site and I can't follow it back so I don't have a complete source for the idea, but I definitely know how I think I am going to create something similar!

So now we are waiting on things to come in to start putting storage systems together. And see how the bedding is going to look together. But in the meantime I can't wait to see what everyone else have been up to this week!

One Room Challenge - Operation Bigger Boy Room Week 2
Hurricane Mathew spared us but we were without a lot of basic amenities (power, water, phone, internet) for the past almost week. Thankfully all but the internet have been restored to our house, and thankfully I put most of this post together last week. My thoughts are with anyone who was affected by it and I am so thankful that Savannah was not damaged any worse than it was. Now onto our regularly scheduled programming.

Our plan is to keep the existing furniture in the room. His spool beds were bought when he was about 6 months old and at least one has been in his room ever since. I love them and the vintage vibe they have. We will be keeping his dressers too because they have sentimental value, one was his dad's and one was his great-grandfather's. We are going to put some wall sconces up over his beds and rearrange his art along with adding some new, and we need to figure out some better book storage. Toy organization is a huge need as I don't really know how to manage all the Hot Wheels and track well, I have some ideas up my sleeve though.

This time around we are going to be working on getting our 5 year old's room more worthy of being called a big boy room. We went ahead and installed new flooring in the room the weekend before week 1 which is good because this week has been a wash thanks to Hurricane Mathew. So instead of progress shots of any kind here is some inspiration for the room.
I love the orange and blue color scheme here, I think we will probably use less of the orange but I am digging the masculine vibe. And the stripes.
This room has such a traditional feel and I love the vintage feel of the furniture as well as the unmatched look of it.
I love EVERYTHING about this room. This has been one of my inspirations for the room for so long. I love the beds, the unmatched feel of the furnishings, the bamboo shades and curtain combo, the gallery feel of the art, and think it feels masculine and like it could grow with our son without being too sophisticated for him now.
This is my son's favorite. I think he likes all the blue and also the stripes. I have a feeling he is responding to the pops of orange as well.

Next week I hope that we have had a chance to order the things we need, this lack of internet is bringing me down!!!! In the meantime I can't wait to see what everyone else has been up to in the last week!

One Room Challenge - Operation Bigger Boy Room Week 1
Yay! It's that time again! Linda, from Calling It Home, is once again hosting the One Room Challenge. This is a platform allowing us all to follow along as 20 design bloggers redesign a space. She also graciously allows anyone with a blog to link up and share a makeover we complete during the 6 week time frame.
This is my third time participating in the ORC. Last fall we redid our laundry room and in the spring we redid our front porch. This time around we are going to be working on getting our 5 year old's room more worthy of being called a big boy room. This room shouldn't be as heavy on the construction and renovation side of things which was a factor in choosing it. I seriously considered either the kitchen or the kids bathroom but we have a bunch of things going on in October along with some gatherings planned for our house and I don't want public spaces in the house to be at risk of being torn up for company. Also, I think the hubs may not currently be up for heavy labor since he and his dad just laid floors throughout the public spaces and we still have bedroom floors to get done.
We did decide to go ahead and install the new flooring in the boy's room this past weekend so we wouldn't have to worry about making time for that during the 5 remaining weeks, and it's a good thing we did because we currently have Hurricane Mathew breathing down our necks and may not even be at home this weekend in advance of his arrival. Since we were experiencing the effects of Hermine over Labor Day when we laid most of the floor and have Mathew coming at us now after we laid this bedroom, I am wondering what the universe is telling us about the flooring we chose!
But, let's cut to the chase, here are some before pics of the room. We almost forgot to get some before moving everything out to redo the floors so excuse the drawer-less dressers. They do have them, we had just already taken them out.
And here is the space with the shiny new floors! So, much brighter and cleaner looking. We did already move furniture back in but will be doing a lot of rethinking and rearranging of things in the weeks to come.
Next week I will have some design plans and inspiration so I hope you come back to see, and in the meantime I can't wait to see who else decides to show up and what they plan on doing! And of course follow along with the featured designers! Thank you so much Linda for hosting this party!!!
